Whitewater Amphitheater: 2016 Live Music Schedule

Whitewater Amphitheater is one of our premier music venues in this area. With a capacity of 5,600 and possibly more with the recent remodels and renovations after two local floods last year, Whitewater brings some of the largest shows to New Braunfels each summer. Here's what they've cooked up for us SO FAR this year!

update: Please pray for Merle Haggard and family as he is still battling with illness and having to unfortunately miss some more shows, but thank you to Whitewater for coming up with great alternatives of Willie with Ryan Bingham on Friday and Saturday night, and Willie with Jamey Johnson plus Shakey Graves on Sunday evening!

The Historic Phoenix Saloon!

Nearly two years ago, Ross and Debbie Fortune, owners of the Phoenix Saloon, applied to the Texas Historical Commission. On Tuesday, March 22, a ceremony was held to dedicate the newly installed historical marker! Read this great story on the history of this cool building below as posted by Myra Lee Adams Goff of The Sophienburg back in 2014. Congrats Ross and Debbie, this is a great honor for a great music venue, restaurant and bar!

Another downtown building, the Phoenix Saloon owners Ross and Debbie Fortune, are applying for a Texas Historical Marker. The Phoenix Saloon history really does live up to the story of the Phoenix, a legendary bird that builds its own funeral pyre, throws itself into the fire, lays an egg in the ashes and hatches a new Phoenix bird. This legend has been used often as a metaphor for rebirth or resurrection. The metaphor fits the local Phoenix Saloon.

The property at the corner of east Castell and west San Antonio Sts., according to the late Roberta Mueller, was owned by Valentine Sippel, her great grandfather. Valentine married Anna Ossman and they had three children: Kaytrina, who was crippled, Henry, who was killed in the Civil War, and finally son John, who lived to be 50 years old by his own choice, when he committed suicide.

John Sippel married into the successful Gruene family by marrying Johanna Gruene. After six children, the marriage ended in a bitter divorce, according to family members. Sippel had built the Phoenix Saloon in 1871 and moved...

Austin Songwriter's Group's Annual Merle Haggard Birthday Bash

(Austin, Tex.) Carrying on their long-standing tradition of celebrating Merle Haggard’s birthday, the Austin Songwriters Group will this year be holding their 11th Annual Merle Haggard Birthday Bash on Sunday, April 3, 2016, the weekend before Haggard’s birth date, April 6th. The event will incorporate performances by local favorites, honoring the legendary songwriter, as well as a silent auction raising funds for ASG. The lineup is yet to be announced.

ASG is currently accepting donations from individuals and businesses alike for the auction, and have suggested gift cards as a popular option. If you are looking to donate to the silent auction, please contact ASG Executive Director Lee Duffy at leeduffy@austinsongwritersgroup.com.

The Austin Songwriters Group is currently in its 30th year of serving Austin’s unique songwriting scene, and is a non-profit organization created by songwriters for songwriters. In 2003, ASG’s current Executive Director, Lee Duffy, joined the board and ASG moved into a new era of its history with an expanded slate of activities and events. In the last ten years, under Lee’s leadership, ASG has gone from holding songwriter meetings at Threadgill’s and a borrowed law office, to its own standalone location, which also includes The Mockingbird Cafe stage.

Lee founded the renowned ASG Songwriter Symposium, which celebrated its 12th year this past January. In addition to the ASG Symposium, Lee Duffy and ASG President, Rick Busby, have also maintained the annual songwriting contests that have been the legacy of ASG since the beginning, while expanding the overall slate of events and activities to include the weekly Song Doctor Sessions, Friday Night Live at The Mockingbird, and recurring songwriting workshops with platinum songwriters and music publishing professionals.

Those interested in learning more about ASG, the Tuesday night Song Doctor Sessions, the Friday Night Live open mics, the group’s history, and how to get involved should visit the ASG website, www.austinsongwritersgroup.com, or visit the group on Twitter (@asgsongwriters) and on Facebook (facebook.com/austinsongwritersgroup).
