Song Premier from Whitney Rose

(press)

This year, Whitney Rose’s road to AmericanaFest starts in Travis County, Texas, where Rose has settled and recorded a new song, “My Boots,” that speaks to self-acceptance.

“My Boots” shows the lighter side of Rose's songwriting. “While it’s ostensibly just about wearing whatever the hell you wanna wear,” Rose says, "it’s also about embracing the quirks and flaws that make you, you.” Rose walks the walk in her custom cactus and rose Liberty cowboy boots, a sparkly nod to her identity. Both are fitting symbols - Rose is no wilting flower, and “My Boots” contains a barbed message about intolerance and autonomy in the defiant feminist spirit of “You Don’t Own Me.”

Rose created a buzz at her AmericanaFest debut last year, and this new song shows the emerging talent has not been resting on any laurels since. The song is the first new music since Heartbreaker of the Year, an album that put Whitney on the Americana map.

“My Boots” features country music royalty Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard) and Earl Poole Ball (Johnny Cash) trading solos over the Waylon-esque groove.

American Songwriter calls it a “defiant new tune.” Listen here

PRESS QUOTES:

- “A sultry country classicist with a tremble in her voice, Whitney Rose is partial to the magisterial gestures of the 1950s and 1960s.” – NY Times

- “Playfully croons through tales of love and mischief with girlish breath and devilish twang.” – Rolling Stone

- “Rose nailed this concoction of joining the purer sides of pop and country. The most exciting part is seeing where she goes next.” – American Songwriter

- “Whitney Rose’s voice sounds like it's comin' on out of a time machine in RCA’s Studio B in Nashville circa 1960. Her songwriting blends vintage R&B and retro country.” — Magnet

- “Sultry, dynamic, spicy in the way it slides between styles yet continues forward cohesively, Heartbreaker of the Year is quite the exhibition of Whitney’s talents.” – Saving Country Music

- "Stark and sultry, here Rose hits heartache right between the eyes. With a croon that wraps dances perfectly between plaintive guitar riffs, Rose skillfully delivers classic country magic.” — Guitar World

- "The Toronto-based singer-songwriter’s sophomore release is a whole heap of fun, filled with songs that recall an earlier age when country and pop were blended to perfection. Rose injects a healthy dose of her own charm and personality into the mix.” —Twangville

- "Her writing is first rate, and she is really fucking good at her instrument.” — PopMatters

Imagine: The 26th Annual John Lennon Tribute

(Austin, Texas) IMAGINE - The 26th Annual John Lennon Tribute - Stephen Doster leads the finely tuned #9 Orchestra through a wide range of John Lennon and Beatles classics in what has become one of Austin’s longest running and finest annual tribute shows on October 9, 2016 at Threadgill's South, 301 W. Riverside Drive, at 7 p.m.Phone: 512.472-9304.
The #9 Orchestra is: Stephen Doster, Tommy Taylor, Andy Salmon, Marie Nehring, Ben Cocke, Bruce Marton, Shana Norton, and Dave Moerbe.  Special guests this year include: Gurf Morlix, Darin Murphy, Johnny Goudie, Miles Zuniga, Seela, Pablo Escalante, Greg Engle, Jon Dee Graham, William Harries Graham, Rick Busby, Jody Denberg, and The Magical Mystery Horns (Sam Jeffrey, Stephen Jeffery, and Kelly Hodge).
The event is being sponsored generously by Atticus Records and Fender, and this year, benefits children in both Mauritania and Swaziland through the Austin non-profit, Guitars For Swaziland. Fender has donated a guitar that will be signed by renowned guitarists and auctioned off at the event.
Also attendees can purchase a sponsorship package that includes a ticket, a T-shirt, and a $25 gift card to Wink. There are fifty packages at $50 each, which you can purchase online at www.guitarsforswaziland.org. All money goes directly to Guitars For Swaziland projects.

Stephen Doster went back to Africa for the State Department this summer with colleague Greg Engle, former US ambassador and currently the Country Director in Ethiopia. “This time we went to Mauritania in the northwest by the Sahara…lots of sand and camels. The people there have an interesting blend of African, Arabic, Sub-Saharan, and Moors in their culture. The music was really amazing and I was given the opportunity to play with a variety of artists including activist and renowned performer, Senator Malouma, who plays the Ardin, a harp-like instrument,” says the Executive Director of Guitars for Swaziland.
Stephen visited Echos de Sahel School and the Malouma Foundation in Mauritania and saw how the children’s lives and education would be enhanced with music. Fender Guitar’s Jeff Van Zandt immediately donated five Fender guitars, four for the schools and one to have signed and auctioned off at IMAGINE - The 26th Annual John Lennon Tribute. Ryan Grizzle from the US Embassy in Mauritania is facilitating the details between Guitars for Swaziland and Mauritanians.
In Swaziland the guitar lessons program at SOS Children' Villages has been ongoing since Fender donated guitars and strings in 2013. Guitars for Swaziland is sending additional strings and supplies, as well as a grant from Atticus Records, to pay local musicians who are giving the orphans lessons. Guitars for Swaziland’s efforts to support music education in Africa is ongoing!

Blue Water Highway Band LIVE on KNBT

This is Blue Water Highway Band's NEW single "Speaking of the Devil", as performed live on 92.1 KNBT FM's morning show with Tom and Rachel. This single is available THIS Friday, and you can get a copy from them at Gruene Hall this Saturday night when they open for Bob Schneider, or Sunday evening back at Gruene Hall from 5 to 9!

Jerry Jeff Walker at River Road Ice House!

Jerry Jeff Walker is an institution around these parts. He's been making music longer than many of his fans have been alive, and that says something when you continue to draw not only a crowd from the droves of fans that have been peppering your audience since you got your start in (and in many ways helped define) this music scene in the late 60's, but you're also drawing an audience from their kids and even some of their grandkids would rather see JJW versus some of the mess that litters the country charts these days. Don't get me wrong, there are some good and talented folks charting, especially lately, but the "what draws a crowd" of today just amazes me!

Come to River Road Ice House on Saturday, September 3rd and see how a real entertainer puts it down! His old pal Bob Livingston will be playing bass on Saturday night, and JJW as always will put on a fantastic show!

By the way, if you want FREE VIP ROOFTOP TICKETS to this show, check our Facebook page!

Here's one of my favorite relatively recent videos of Jerry Jeff.
